Prague – The number of cases of acute respiratory infections in the Czech Republic has slightly increased, with almost a fifth of them being sick with the flu. According to the State Health Institute (SZÚ), it has been confirmed that the second wave of the epidemic has arrived. He stated this in a press release today. There were 1,422 patients with various respiratory tract infections last week per 100,000 inhabitants, almost one percent more than in the previous week. On the other hand, according to data from the Ministry of Health, there were fewer people tested positive for covid-19 in a week-on-week comparison.

Experts expected an increase in the number of flu cases. “We are thus copying an imaginary second wave of flu, caused primarily by type B influenza viruses, which is also manifesting itself elsewhere in Europe. It can be expected that this second wave will pass within a few weeks, it is nothing exceptional,” said the head of the Department of Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases at the SZÚ Jan Kynčl.

The number of patients with respiratory infections, among which the SZÚ, in addition to flu and covid-19, also includes rhinoviruses that cause colds, the RS virus and other infections, increased compared to the previous week, mainly among adults aged 25 to 64. The highest morbidity is still in the Pardubice and South Moravian regions. According to him, outbreaks of epidemics of respiratory diseases remain in most regions.

“We are observing a different development in the category of influenza diseases, where the rise in total morbidity is close to 20 percent, and the highest number of sick people has increased among adults aged 25 and over,” Kynčl added.

Since autumn, doctors have recorded 291 clinically serious cases of influenza. , when the patient needed intensive hospital care. 106 of them died.
