Any alcoholic drink increases the risk of heart problems
The molecule that names alcohol is called 'ethanol' and it is a toxic substance. Ethanol is found in the composition of alcoholic beverages in a natural or acquired form, and its concentration is equal to or greater than 1% of its volume. According to the RAE, 'toxic' is any substance or preparation that, in small doses, produces death or acute or chronic effects, by inhalation, ingestion, or penetration into the skin. “It is a transparent and colorless liquid and the main ingredient in alcoholic beverages such as beer, wine or brandy. As it dissolves easily in water and other organic compounds, it is also an ingredient in cosmetics, colognes, paints, varnishes, and fuels. Can something used above all as a solvent, disinfectant and fuel be healthy? ”, The doctor eCarlos Casabona warned in an interview with Infosalus.
This Spanish specialist has published together with the dietician-nutritionist Julio Basulto 'Beber sin sed' (Paidós), a guide on all the drinks available and to be had, and that usually form part of our day to day. A chapter of his book is dedicated to alcoholic beverages, which are striking that many times we drink them without being thirsty, thanks to the current 'drinking culture' that in his opinion “hurts us so much”.
Casabona emphasizes that the reasons why alcohol is very bad for our health are “clear, logical and easy to understand”; noting that fundamentally these are derived from their chemical composition:
1.- It is neurotoxic (affects neurons): Alcohol affects, in a few seconds after ingestion, the reasoning ability every time it is drunk, even if it is a small amount. There is no safe consumption dose , although the advertising claims that we enjoy responsible consumption. Thus, it undoubtedly damages neurons, causing permanent damage to memory, reasoning ability and the way we behave.
2.- It is addictive , that is, its habitual intake can condition a physical need to consume it on a daily basis, in such a way that it becomes an unhealthy habit from which it is very difficult to get out without help.
3.- It is teratogenic: It affects the fetus and can cause serious malformations and disorders of the fetal alcohol spectrum (FASD). Up to 40,000 babies are born with a TEAF each year in the United States . These disorders are lifelong, and their effects can result in serious physical and mental problems.
4.- It is carcinogenic: Its consumption has been related to cancer of the mouth, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, breast in women, liver and intestine.
5.- It is implicated in millions of deaths in the world due to traffic accidents, suicides, fatal assaults, etc.
6.- It causes emotional and labor problems in individuals, in their families, in society as a whole and has high economic and environmental costs.
Both specialists also warn in the book of certain aspects that you should know, such as their firm rejection, and more than scientifically proven, that a glass of wine a day is beneficial for heart health : “The level of consumption of alcohol that minimizes the loss of health is zero. The only thing we can do with alcoholic beverages is to discourage them ”.
Here they also recall that, for example, the European Society of Cardiology in 2019 declared that “alcohol consumption should not be promoted in moderation to protect cardiovascular disease”, at the same time that the WHO in 2012 pointed out that “alcohol is harmful to the system cardiovascular”. That is why they say: “Wine is not good for the heart. Any alcoholic drink increases the risk of suffering from heart problems ”.
