London – Award-winning Czech sound engineer Viktor Prášil described the BAFTA awards in London as “an incredible experience”. The awards of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts on Sunday were won in seven categories by the German director Edward Berger's On the Western Front, calmness, during which Prášil was responsible for recording all the sound during filming. On Sunday, he stood alongside three of his colleagues on stage at the Royal Festival Hall with the iconic bronze BAFTA mask in hand. He spoke to ČTK today on his way from London.
“For me, it was like watching myself on TV and seeing all these people around me, it was an incredible experience. Our whole delegation went there just to enjoy it. No one expected the film to take so many awards, including the one for the best film,” Prášil described Sunday's ceremony, which was also attended by British Prince William and his wife Kate.
On the Western Front, Tranquility, based on Erich Maria Remarque's novel of the same name from 1929, is also nominated for an American Oscar for sound. It premiered in September last year, but filming took place in the first half of 2021 and preparations for it began many months earlier.
Prášil described that even before filming he worked as a sound engineer with costume designers and other crew members. For example, placing microphones on the uniform of a World War I German soldier, who was carrying various military equipment in places where a sound engineer would normally place wireless microports, was a challenge. “I also studied the interviews with (Stuart) Wilson, who did the sound for the film 1917 and drew experience from him,” Prášil told DVTV internet television. nothing at all.
