Quebec is a backward step and will keep finally, the site originally chosen by the former government Couillard to build the hospital in Vaudreuil-Soulanges in the Montérégie.

“We wanted to take the time to meet with all stakeholders concerned and ensure that if we were going forward with this site, the work would be carried out in order to minimize environmental impacts and to compensate for the loss of agricultural land,” said the minister of Health and social Services, Danielle McCann, by way of a press release on Friday.

The project of building a hospital in Vaudreuil-Soulanges, in an agricultural area located to the west of highway 30, had been put on ice by the government caquiste last December. The Montreal metropolitan Community (CMM), had invited the minister, at the end of November to find another location, which would comply with the plan métropolitain d’aménagement et de development (WADP).

The terms of compensation for the loss of agricultural land will be clarified at a later date, indicates the office of the minister. It provides however already that ” the area of close proximity around the future hospital will serve including of urban agriculture-oriented vegetable health.”

The member of parliament for Vaudreuil, the liberal Marie-Claude Nichols, welcomed the change of direction of the government Legault, arguing that it is primarily a “victory” for the citizens of the region who “deserve” the construction of such a facility so that the emergency overflow.

The spokesman of the official opposition in the field of health care and public health, André Fortin, for his part, mainly criticized the change of the opinion of the government, which has caused them to lose time at the start of the project. “The setbacks of the CAQ in this folder demonstrate a lack of knowledge of the folder and all the work of the MRC in recent years. All this procrastination does not make that cause delays to a project that is essential “, he lamented.

The hospital of over 400 beds is expected to open in 2027. The project is estimated at $ 1.5 billion.
