Beijing was awarded the olympics almost by default, taking the lead at the expense of Almaty, Kazakhstan.
The president of China, Xi Jinping, has said that his country is on track to deliver the olympic winter Games “grandiose” in 2022.
The chinese government has promised that the olympics are “green, inclusive, open-minded, and devoid of corruption,” said Xi to the IOC president, Thomas Bach, on Thursday.
“We will deliver the Games awe-inspiring,” added Xi, in the beginning of his speech held at the great hall of the people in Beijing.
Xi said that preparations were well advanced because of the “efficient and orderly” of his people.
In return, Bach said that his delegation had been impressed by his visits to the olympic facilities, the complex of training dedicated to winter sports as well as by the Festival of ice sculptures and snow in Harbin, in the north-east of the country.
“We have witnessed the dynamism and efficiency of China in its preparations for the olympic Games,” mentioned Bach.
Beijing was awarded the olympics almost by default, taking the lead at the expense of Almaty, in Kazakhstan, after six applications of european cities were removed due to the prohibitive costs of the organization of this international sports event and the irritability of the taxpayers.
His victory is attributable to the prowess of the organizational of the municipality, its financial stability and its ability to convert existing facilities. Beijing has obtained the majority support of its citizens, even if the chinese communist Party severely punishes the citizen participation in such decision-making processes.
The victory of Beijing occurred in spite of concerns about the quality of the air and the long winter and dry in the municipality, which will have to mainly rely on artificial snow in order to ensure the smooth running of the games. Nordic events will be presented in the area of Zhaolong, in the neighbouring province of Hebei, which usually receives a good amount of snow each winter.
The government has also been criticized for its history of respect for the rights of the person, especially after they have imprisoned hundreds of thousands of Chinese muslim origin in camps of re-education.
Moreover, after having been again rejected by a referendum, the IOC has not more than two candidate cities for the award of the winter Games of 2026 — Stockholm, Sweden, and the joint candidature of Milan and Cortina D’ampezzo, Italy. These two applications have also their concerns, and the organizers are trying to accelerate the grant-making process before they decide to withdraw from the race.
