Despite the economic uncertainty, the City of Rivière-du-Loup managed to generate a surplus of $4 million during its last fiscal year.
In the financial report adopted at the city council on Tuesday evening, we also learn that the net debt has increased by 7 million dollars, to reach nearly 66 million. Despite this increase, the mayor of Rivière-du-Loup maintains that his city's financial results are good.

In recent years, many major works have been carried out on the territory of the municipality, which has had an impact on the city's debt. For the next few years, elected officials have agreed to slow down the pace, in order to respect the financial capacity of residents. In 2022, the City invested more than $28 million in various projects, including the construction of the fire station and the renovation of the Françoise-Bédard library.
“In 2023 we will complete the construction of the fire station and then we will take a step back to assess future projects. »
— Mario Bastille, Mayor of Rivière-du-Loup
Mayor Mario Bastille is particularly proud of the work done by city employees to rationalize certain expenses. It was partly the result of their labor that resulted in a surplus of just over $4 million.
Part of this sum will make it possible to invest $181,180 in social housing projects, in particular to carry out studies. The mayor says he is well aware that this amount will not significantly increase the number of housing units on his territory. According to him, it could however make it possible to accelerate the realization of certain projects in Rivière-du-Loup.
