Police said it was a “case of vandalism”. According to her, it was not immediately known who was behind the incident. AFP said it was an apparent show of support for Moscow amid the war in Ukraine.
It is estimated that at least a million visitors a year come to see the bronze Little Mermaid on Langelinie pier in Copenhagen. As a well-known symbol, the fairy is also a frequent target of attacks by vandals. It has been smeared with paint many times, toppled and even decapitated.
The statue was installed at the entrance to Copenhagen harbor in 1913 in honor of the Danish storyteller Hans Christian Andersen.
