The Council of Ministers approved this Tuesday the Royal Decree that will allow the sale of self-diagnostic tests, that is, of antigens or antibodies, against Covid-19 in pharmacies without the need for a prescription.

At a press conference, the Government spokesperson and Minister of Territorial Policy, Isabel Rodríguez, described this decision as “a much sought-after and desired measure,” and congratulated the Ministry of Health for the agreement reached with the pharmaceutical associations and the pharmaceutical industry. .

Rodríguez stressed that with its sale without a prescription, citizens are allowed to carry out, “in a personal capacity, a prevention exercise” against possible infections. In any case, he insisted that if the test is positive, you should go to the health center to “check again” the diagnosis and be able to register it with the health system.

In an appearance before the Health and Consumer Affairs Commission of the Congress of Deputies, Darias claimed last week that “it is necessary to increase the diagnostic capacity to more quickly identify suspected positive cases and even asymptomatic ones, as is happening in the population from 12 to 29 years of age, and to control the progression of the pandemic in the most effective way possible ”.

“The requirement of prescription was a barrier,” admitted the minister. This Royal Decree-Law received on Friday, July 8, the mandatory positive opinion of the Council of State.

Darias justified why these diagnostic tests have taken so long to arrive in Spain, in contrast to other European countries such as France or Germany, where they can be purchased in pharmacies, without a prescription and at reasonable prices, for months.

“Until we had the existence of a self-diagnostic test with CE marking, we could not authorize it. We were waiting for the arrival to the market. As soon as they arrived, we started with the processing of the Royal Decree-Law, which has its process. We were also waiting for the opinion of the Council of State, “he explained.

According to the figures provided by Darias, up to five tests with CE markings and another 11 with marking in Europe will be available, while another 39 are under investigation.
