The work of the first Czech tapestry manufactory will be complemented by tapestries woven according to the designs of excellent Czech artists – Mikuláš Medek, Karel Malich, Jiří Sopek and Petr Niklo.

The tapestries based on the expressive linocuts of Josef Čapek from 1915 to 1919 were created in Meziříčí last year. “The intention to monumentalize these small graphic works in tapestry has matured for me for more than 20 years. There is a special inner affinity between tapestry and linocut, not only by the mirror rotation of the motif during realization, but above all by precisely defined morphology and graphically purely expressed light transitions,” he told ČTK when the tapestries were created, the director of the manufactory, Jan Timotej Strýček.

According to him, the immediate impulse to start the work was the topicality of Čapko's uncompromising attitude towards the growing evil of Nazism. “Today we are confronted with a similar evil, superior arrogance and disrespect for life. That is why, I think, it is necessary for Josef Čapek to be here with us now,” said Strýček.

Manufaktura deals with the restoration of historical works , also by hand weaving classic tapestries, carpets and artistic tapestries. It was founded in 1898. After November 1989, it was closed for more than a year, as it belonged to the Center for Arts and Crafts and was one of the last centers to turn up during privatization. After the resumption of activity, he has, among other things, the restoration of many centuries-old tapestries and tapestries.
