Chomutov – Žabin Brno basketball players defeated SBŠ Ostrava 97:54 in the semi-finals of the Czech Cup in Chomutov and will attack to defend last year's championship and their 19th triumph in total. In Sunday's final, starting at 16:00, they will face the domestic Lionesses, who won over Slovanka 77:70 and achieved a historic success in the process.
Natálie Stoupalová's 18 points helped Žabin's winning entry into the Final Four. The second team in the league table behind the dominant USK, which did not enter the cup and is concentrating on fighting in the Europa League, had the reins of the match against seventh-ranked Ostrava in their hands from the start. American Bria Holmesová (15), Petra Záplatová (12) and Eliška Hamzová with Michaela Vondráčková (both 10) scored double-digit points in a clear fight. But the best scorer of the match was Adéla Smutná from Ostrava with 20 points.
“We were very successful in entering, which was the key to our winning by so many points. We played aggressively in defense and that allowed us to play quick counterattacks,” said Hamzová in the club's press release. “The final will be about something different. We have to prepare, rest and get into it tomorrow,” added the representative quarterback.
Chomutov was led to the best club result by the American Najai Wynnová-Pollardová, who recorded a double double thanks to 27 points and 12 rebounds.
The Lionesses led by 23 points in the third quarter, but Slovanka dramatized the match and reduced it to 62:65 in the 36th minute. However, the home players did not allow a turnover and kept the end of the match.
