The last district outside Taliban control refuses to “surrender” and prepares to fight

Ahmed Masoud, the commander of the last remaining district “out of control” of the Afghan Taliban, said he hoped to hold peace talks with the group that seized Kabul last week, but stressed that his forces were ready to fight.

The son of the late Afghan leader Ahmed Shah Masoud said that the Panjshir Valley will not be handed over to the Taliban, and that if they try to control it, “we are ready to resist,” noting that Afghanistan is on the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe, and that it is back again as a safe haven for terrorism, calling on the international community to support the people Afghan.

“We want the Taliban to realize that the only way forward is negotiations… We don’t want an outbreak of war”.

Massoud emphasized that his supporters were ready to fight if the Taliban tried to invade their province.

Ahmed Masoud called for the formation of an inclusive government to take over the rule of the country with the participation of the Taliban, warning that “there is no escape from war if the Taliban refuses dialogue.”

Masoud confirmed that government forces opposed to the Taliban had gathered in different provinces, and had gathered in his stronghold in the province of Panjshir.

Massoud had appealed to the West for support in an opinion piece in the Washington Post on Thursday.

“We have a mixture of forces from regular army units, special forces and local factions,” Masoud said.

He also stressed that he wanted an inclusive government, warning: “The world should not support a totalitarian regime.”

Massoud pointed out that the opposition in the province of Panjshir includes other areas, and he intends to defend the entire Afghanistan.
