Singapore – The elimination of Hana Matelova in the women's doubles round of 16 ended the WTT tournament of the highest category Smash in Singapore for Czech table tennis. The Czech representative and Slovak team-mate Barbora Balážová were not enough in the second round for the Austrian-Romanian pair of reigning European champions Sofia Polcanová and Bernadette Szocsová. The favorites won 3:0.
In the first round of doubles, Matelová recorded the only Czech victory in the main competition at the elite tournament, after she and Balážová defeated the Australian pair of Jee Min-hyung and Liu Yang-zi 3-0. In the singles match, Matelová did not even win a set in the opening round against world number seven Chen Sing-chung from China, and the only Czech in the men's main competition, Tomáš Polanský, lost to Yukija Uda from Japan after progressing from the three-round qualification. He had a 2-0 lead over the 20th ranked player in the world, but his opponent managed the next three sets better.
The prestigious tournament will last until Sunday, when it will culminate in the final matches in singles. Their winners will receive $100,000.
