“It is hard to finish like that. Difficult to hang up the cleats prematurely, at the age of 36.” Jérémy Mathieu is part of the players who are injured during the recovery. The defender and French international announced on Thursday 25 June that he was retiring. Like him, Sergio Ramos, Sergio Agüero, Marcus Thuram, or even Gonzalo Higuain joined the infirmaries of their club since the resumption, after a three-month shutdown due to containment related to the outbreak of coronavirus.

“Statisticians have already counted three times more injuries than normal, according to the consultant football Radio France, Jérôme Alonso. But all this is absolutely logical. It is important to know that a footballer has three or four weeks of summer vacation. There is on three months of inactivity, with a recovery in the cleat. Therefore the body is not prepared for it.” The solution, for him, would have been “back with a job property and a athletic preparation at least seven or eight weeks.”

Three months without sport, it is very long
During the confinement, the strength coaches have followed players to distance, and offers them training suited. But to Pierre Lassus, fitness coach at PSG, nothing replaces the field : “football is a sport of contact, so it is clear that following a period of detraining too long, there may be injuries as well muscle that joint.”
It is not surprised to see an upsurge in injuries in the country who have already picked up the season. “This follows after a period of time not always adequate. During the containment, it was complicated to string together workouts, correct diet and lifestyle healthy. So, there we will find a capital muscle that is short of what it could be prior to the confinement.”
In the meantime of play, the League 1 observe
The topic has generated debate, but there is an advantage to the ruling of the League 1 : be able to observe what is happening in the other major european leagues to not make the same mistakes. Pierre Lassus is prevented, while the Paris Saint-Germain has only just resuming training on Thursday, 25 June : “we need to try to juggle them, find a balance with a progression in the intensities to try to limit these falls or relapses of injuries, primarily muscle.”
While the League 1 must start the next season on 22 August, the clubs can take inspiration from some of the ideas tested with our neighbours, such as the five replacements allowed, to avoid the avalanche of injuries.
