New York – According to The New York Times (NYT), former US President Donald Trump could soon face indictment in connection with the payment for the silence of porn star Stormy Daniels. If this were to happen, it would be the first indictment of one of the American ex-presidents. According to the NYT, it could significantly affect the presidential campaign ahead of the 2024 election, in which Trump, who denies any wrongdoing, wants to return to the White House.

On the impending indictment, the NYT, which is basing its report on four unnamed sources, infers that investigators have given Trump the opportunity to testify before a grand jury next week. According to the newspaper, such an offer almost always precedes an indictment.
In New York, people facing indictment have the opportunity to appear before a grand jury. However, they mostly do not use it, and Trump is not expected to do so either.
The case concerns a payment of $130,000 (CZK 2.9 million) to Stormy Daniels in the last days of the 2016 presidential campaign. The porn actress received the money from former Trump personal lawyer Michael Cohen. She claims it was a bribe to keep quiet about her affair with Trump.
The Republican ex-president denies having an affair with her and talks about a witch hunt. He called state representative Alvin Bragg, who is a Democrat and black, a politically motivated racist.
