The President of the United States was going to withdraw from NATO if the partners will not increase spending on defense.
President Donald trump said that he doesn’t want US withdrawal from NATO, reports the Chronicle.info with reference to the Correspondent.
“No, I don’t want to go… But I wish they (the other NATO countries) pay their fair share,” said trump.
He also talked about the steps taken to counter Russia. Among other things, he called their efforts to convince NATO allies to increase funding for the Alliance.
According to trump, because of his actions eight of the NATO countries fulfill their obligations, spending on defense needs at least 2% of GDP.
“But, by the way, 2% is too little… I had some who didn’t pay and now they pay. And they asked me a serious question: “You would have… ?” And I said, “I’d”. And if you don’t give an answer, they are not going to pay,” explained trump.
We will remind, in January of 2019 Congress passed a bill banning Trump to use public funds to withdraw from NATO. Did it after the media publications about trump’s desire to withdraw from the Alliance.
