Moscow/Kiev – A Su-34 fighter was shot down over the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine. Ukrainian forces volunteered to destroy it. The Unian agency pointed out that the plane managed to hit near the city of Yenakiev, i.e. in the depth of the territory occupied by Russia. According to the RIA Novosti agency, the Russian-appointed mayor of the city also confirmed the downing of the plane, but at the same time he disputed that the plane belonged to Russian forces.

“One of the (Russian) pilots has died and the other is going to keep him company,” the Unian agency quoted the Ukrainian air force as saying.

The mayor loyal to Moscow, on the other hand, claims that both pilots they survived. “The pilots are alive, they ejected,” he told TASS. “We cannot yet confirm whose plane it is, whether it is ours or the enemy's,” he added.

Previously, he warned the city's residents via the Telegram communication platform to take shelter in a safe place. “A plane was shot down over the city. Do not stay outside. We are trying to clarify the situation,” he said.

A black column of smoke can be seen in the photo the mayor accompanied his message. Footage from the scene also appeared on the Ukrainian platform 1+1 video.
