Vuelta 2021, eighth stage: Jakobsen equalizes the score
Fabio Jakobsen (Deceuninck Quick Step) won the eighth stage of the 76th Vuelta Espana. The Dutch sprinter clearly prevailed in the sprint at the end of the soporific fraction that brought the caravan from Santa Pola to La Manga del Mar Menor along 173 kilometers.
With today’s second place Alberto Dainese (Team DSM) obtained the best blue position in this edition of the Iberian race. In third place went the Belgian Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin Fenix), today reached by Jakobsen with two victories. The general classification remains unchanged with the Slovenian Primoz Roglic (Jumbo Visma) in the roja jersey with an eight-second advantage over the German Felix Grosschartner (Bora Hansgrohe) and 25 over the Spaniard Enric Mas (Deceuninck Quick Step).
It was a transfer stage in the truest sense of the term with the riders intent on recovering as much energy as possible after yesterday’s very tiring stage and, above all, in view of what awaits them tomorrow. On the other hand, the route of the ninth stage scheduled by Puerto Lumbreras in Alto de Velefique it inspires respect, if not fear. We will climb 4,500 meters in altitude with a first-class GPM and the finish will coincide with the first “especial” roughness of this Vuelta. We await a clarifying ruling from the street.
