At the beginning of the confinement period, the proponents of the digital transformation companies are quickly converted to telework in saying that it was an opportunity to finally overtake resistance that had blocked the development of the work from home. However, studies show that telecommuting also has its negative aspects, in particular on mental health, which can lead to psychological damage non-negligible. This crisis so, was it really the right time to adopt telework in a widespread manner? According to one study, telecommuting will never be suitable for everyone.
The health crisis is not necessarily the best time to dematerialize the work station
According to a study by Opinion Way on the well-being at work, almost half of the French is in psychological distress (44% of respondents), and a relatively remarkable present signs of severe mental illness : 18 % of teleworkers confined exhibit signs of anxiety or depression. The persons confined as a couple or with a child would be those who suffer the more severe disturbances, with a rate that rises to 20% and 22% respectively.
The cause ? These people suffer the effects of mental workload increased, linked to the multiple roles (family and work) and sometimes to the bad conditions of their housing.
France-Soir has published a study on 2100 French to assess their perceptions of containment. The study also highlights the importance of the growing uncertainties of the employers on the future of their business. 56% of respondents anticipate substantial reductions in turnover, and consider that the containment will have a negative impact on economic activity. 73% of those surveyed believe that their turnover will decrease by more than 20%.
11% of employees believe that the crisis threatens their business and therefore their jobs.
In summary, for the containment, the sources of stress accumulate for tele-workers : in addition to the uncertainties related to the probable economic crisis, they need to reconcile work and family life, and this in conditions that are not adapted and sometimes really bad (dwellings are too small or poorly lit, etc). The passage to telework in this context, therefore, is not the best way to convince anyone of the advantage of the meetings by video-conferencing for the long term. Anyway, the whole world would not be more appreciated and adopted telework, even outside of the current outbreak. According to a study by the Think Tank, English IEA telework will never be generalizable to everyone.
Lone working is not suitable for everyone
Despite the psychological stress additional, some still manage to take advantage of the benefits of teleworking : no travel to the office, no more traffic jams or crowds in the metro, meetings in pajamas, higher productivity, etc, However, all workers are not adapted to the work at home and some may find the isolation problem.
According to this study, once the containment past, it seems unlikely that employees can work productively isolated distance. This can only work for a few months. The majority of the professions is not really suitable for teleworking; this mode of operation on only part of the “privileged” of society, in the sectors of the digital economy, immaterial, the higher intellectual occupations, etc
