Aspen (USA) – Swiss skier Marco Odermatt won the super-giant slalom in Aspen at the end of the American World Cup series and secured the small globe for the evaluation of this discipline for the first time. At the same time, the two-time world champion again came close to defending his first place in the overall standings of the series.

Twenty-five-year-old Odermatt scored his ninth victory in the SP season in Colorado, including his fifth in the super-G. The Olympic champion in the giant slalom beat the German Andreas Sander by five hundredths of a second, who at the age of 33 won the first cup podiums in his career.

Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, the defending champion from last year, finished third with a distance of 34 hundredths of a second, who could still theoretically deprive Odermatt of the small globe. After today, however, the Norwegian loses 188 points to his Swiss opponent, while only the super-G will go to the season finale in Soldo. At least Kilde will take home from Aspen the certainty of a small downhill globe, which he won with Saturday's victory.

“Each crystal globe is the biggest in our sport. It proves that a person is the best throughout the season and not that he could only have a good day like at the World Championships,” said Odermatt, who scored five wins in seven super-giant slaloms this year one second and one third place. “Marco deserved it. I had speed in the super-G, but I made a lot of mistakes,” said Kilde.

Odermatt won a small globe for the giant slalom last season and, above all, a big one for the overall evaluation of the SP. The Swiss is practically certain to defend his first place. Before the final six races of the season, he leads Kild by 386 points, moreover, unlike him, the Norwegian will not start next week in two giant slaloms in Kranjska Gora.
