Washington – American author and political activist Marianne Williamson announced today that she will seek the Democratic nomination for the 2024 US presidential election. She is thus the first Democratic challenger for the current president, Joe Biden. This is reported by the AP agency, according to which this author of spiritually oriented books has only a small chance of receiving a nomination.

“As of today, I am a candidate for the office of President of the United States,” Williamson said at the campaign launch in the capital, Washington.

The 70-year-old writer, lecturer and activist is the author of a number of books, including several bestsellers. She is the founder of the Angel Food project, a volunteer food program that helps people with AIDS, for example. She also co-founded a non-profit organization supporting education and peace projects.

However, according to AP, this former “spiritual adviser” of the famous presenter Oprah Winfrey will probably represent only symbolic opposition to Biden in the primaries, since the “democratic establishment” is behind the president, i.e. Democrats from the left spectrum, who could be potential competitors for him. Williamson unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic nomination in the last presidential election, but according to the AP, her campaign was characterized by “quirky appeals for spiritual healing” rather than real voter support.

“You can appreciate what the president did when he defeated the Republicans in 2020 and still feel it's time to move on,” she said in a recent interview on Good Morning New Hampshire.

80-year-old Biden is the oldest president in US history and would have been 86 at the end of his second term. A majority of Americans – and even a majority of Democrats – say they do not want him to run again, according to a recent AP-NORC poll.

Biden is expected to announce in the coming weeks that he wants to defend the mandate in the next election. First lady Jill Biden recently told the AP that the president has “almost nothing” to do but choose the time and place to announce his candidacy.

Biden's political advisers say they are not worried about the Democratic primaries. According to them, Biden wants to defeat former Republican President Donald Trump again in the next election. He also thinks a 2024 campaign against another Republican, such as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, would look similar because top Republicans remain supporters of Trump's Make America Great Again movement.
