Boston, which lost the previous two games and conceded eleven goals in them, was guided to victory by the opening period. After only fifty seconds, Trent Frederic opened the scoring and in the fourteenth minute he put Zach up. The Czech attacker took over the puck on the defensive blue line, headed to the right side into the attacking zone and made his way with a wrist shot to the near post. Zacha scored the eighteenth goal of the season, setting a new scoring record.
The win was sealed in a Winnipeg game without a goalie by Nosek, to whom Pastrňák passed to break away, and hit an empty net from the offensive blue line. The main architect of Boston's success was Jeremy Swayman, who blocked all 36 shots and scored his third shutout of the season. On the losing side, David Rittich watched the match from the substitutes.
Gudas added a point when his shot from the blue line was deflected by Ryan Lomberg to make it 5-3 in the eleventh minute. Florida scored the seventh goal at 13:18 and became the first team since 1985 to score seven or more goals in the opening period. The Panthers led 9:4 in the 28th minute, but they did not equal the club record with the tenth goal. The cannonade was led by Matthew Tkachuk (1+3), Carter Verhaeghe and Aaron Ekblad scored twice.
