Delta Air Lines has become the first major US company to impose fines on unvaccinated employees. Thus, the airline’s new policy establishes that those who have not received the Covid-19 vaccine will be penalized with $ 200 (170 euros) per month, all with the aim of advancing the vaccination campaign.
According to the memorandum published this Wednesday and which includes this new measure, 75% of its workers have already been vaccinated. The increase in cases linked to the delta variant has been what has led Delta to encourage its staff to receive punctures, as explained by the CEO of the airline, Ed Bastian.

The aforementioned surcharge will be applied to those workers who have not received the serum before November 1, although from September 12 they will be required to test weekly. What’s more. These employees must wear masks in any interior space and the company will only provide payment protection against COVID for contracting the disease to those who have been immunized with both doses, which means that those who are not vaccinated will have to use the “sick days”.
Delta’s measure joins that of other companies such as United Airlines, Alphabet, Cisco, Ford, Walmart, Facebook or Goldman Sachs, which have established the vaccine as mandatory for all their workers. However, experts consider that surcharges such as Delta’s are as effective as measures that establish vaccination as mandatory to work in companies.

The objective of the economic penalty is to “address the financial risk” implied by the decision of these workers, said Bastian. The hospital stay of each employee with covid has cost Delta $ 40,000, the company has detailed.
At the moment, no Spanish airline has imposed mandatory vaccination for its crews, nor has the international organization IATA, which groups most of the world’s airlines, have included this measure in its guidelines.
