The media have been talking about the possibility that Apple is also developing a foldable smartphone or tablet for months. And if for the moment, this has still not been confirmed by the Cupertino company (this one rarely mentions the products under development), things are becoming clearer little by little.

Indeed, a few days ago, an article from Gizmodo relays a source from the social network Weibo and indicating that Apple has recently placed an order with Samsung to obtain samples of foldable screens. In addition to this, the Cupertino company would also have raised the possibility of a one-year contract that would allow Samsung to be the soul supplier of Apple’s folding screens.

In addition to foldable screens, Apple would also be interested in technologies that allow a front camera to be hidden under the screen. This new technology allows manufacturers to offer smartphones without a notch, since the front camera is hidden under a part of the screen which can become transparent when you want to take pictures.

But of course, at the moment, this is just a rumor. Therefore, caution remains in order. In any case, it wouldn’t be surprising if Apple is also interested in foldable smartphones. However, for the moment, it is not known when the firm could launch its first foldable smartphone. It is quite possible that Apple decides to wait a bit before launching.

For its part, Samsung already has several models on the market. In 2019, he launched the Galaxy Fold. Then, in early 2020, Samsung launched the Galaxy Z Flip. And very recently, during the presentation of the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, Samsung unveiled another foldable smartphone: the Galaxy Z Fold 2. In addition, the media are already talking about the next foldable smartphones from Samsung, including a model which could be called Galaxy Z Fold S.

Huawei and Motorola have also already launched their first foldable smartphones. And Xiaomi has already given a preview of a prototype it is working on, but which has yet to be launched until now. And currently, there is a rumor that Google may launch its first foldable Pixel smartphone next year.

Apple: a foldable smartphone without a foldable screen?

While the Gizmodo source indicates that Apple has ordered foldable screen samples from Samsung, another source suggests that the Cupertino company could go for a completely different design. A few weeks ago, we were relaying information from YouTuber Jon Prosser that Apple might not use foldable screens.

According to him, the prototype developed by the Cupertino company would have two screens, like Microsoft’s Surface Duo. However, when the device is open it would give us the impression that it is just one screen. Apple has also reportedly developed a textile hinge mechanism that allows for more durability.

If not, another rumor suggests that Apple could launch its first foldable device in 2023. However, it would not actually be a foldable iPhone, but rather a foldable iPad that could use the iPadOS operating system. This would use Micro LED technology for the screen as well as an A16X or A17 processor. But then again, this is just a rumor to be taken with extreme caution.
