Maximilian Gunther won the first New York E-Prix, tenth round of the World Cup Formula E 2021. The German of the BMW house preceded under the checkered flag Jean-Eric Vergne (DS Techeetah) and Lucas di Grassi (Audi).
For Gunther it is the first podium in 2021 and the third electric success, while the The German manufacturer celebrates the second victory of the season under the eyes of Michael Andretti. Starting fourth, Gunther kept his position at the start, and then first of all took care to manage his energy as best as possible, guaranteeing himself a slight advantage over his opponents. An energetic extra which turned out to be fundamental in the finale.
Passed in third position at half an hour with an overtaking against Buemi, the BMW rider continued to sail behind Cassidy and Vergne on the last step of the virtual podium until the 30th lap, when the Frenchman tried to attack the first position of the New Zealander, but finishing long under braking.
Plot twist. @JeanEricVergne goes for a move into the lead BUT @maxg_official TAKES THE POSITION 🔥

A maneuver that penalized both contenders: the Virgin driver saw himself being pushed off the trajectory slipping fourth, while Vergne uncovered the side of the BMW # 28, which took home a double overtaking and took the lead in the race. A few laps and Gunther has stretched with decision, leaving in place Vergne, then second, and Lucas di Grassi, excellent to climb from seventh place to the third step of the podium.
Leading for 30 laps, Nick finally had to settle for the wooden medal Cassidy, who at the end found himself in the uncomfortable position of keeping Robin behind Frijns, in full fight for the World Cup. The Dutchman, who started 11th, was able to climb the group up to 5th place, taking home those ten points necessary to close the gap with Edoardo Mortara, now paired at the top of the standings.
The rider Venturi, forced to start last due to a technical problem in qualifying (he had to face the fastest lap with only 200 kW of power), finished 14th, and now he will also have to watch out for Vergne’s return, third at only seven points. .
Sixth and seventh place for Sebastien’s Nissan Buemi and Oliver Rowland. Eighth André Lotterer on the only Porsche left in the race. On lap 11 Wehrlein had to raise the white flag after bumping into Lynn at the hairpin for a long braking.
On the edge of the points area two riders protagonists of excellent comebacks. Ninth place for Sam Bird, started in twentieth position (Evans retired instead on lap 16). Tenth place for René Rast, which started 23rd.
Out of the positions that count Alex Lynn, slipped from third on the grid to 11th at the finish. The two Mercedes are still dry, with De Vries 13th and Vandoorne retired. A double zero that promotes DS Techeetah to lead the World Team.
