Endometriosis is a painful and chronic condition in which the uterus tissue grows inappropriately outside the uterus. Current treatments are limited and include the surgery and hormone therapy, which can lead to unwanted side effects. New research from Baylor College of Medicine, the University of Oxford, the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Bayer AG offers new insights into how to treatthis debilitating disease.
THE study results have been published in the scientific journal Science Translational Medicine.
Endometriosis: Here’s what the new research says
The team of scientists performed genetic analyzes on humans and rhesus macaques to identify a specific gene, NPSR1, which increases the risk for the women of being affected by endometriosis. The results reveal a potential new non-hormonal drug target that can lead to better therapy.
