“The chess player” from Mariquita, a municipality in the department of Tolima, was being held in the Butner federal prison in North Carolina, United States; There he was serving a 30-year sentence for sending at least 150 kilos of cocaine in 1990. It is estimated that at this time the drug trafficker was responsible for 90% of the shipment of drugs to the North American country.
Since 2004, when he was extradited, he had presented various changes in his health, such as the heart attack that gave him that year, or when he was diagnosed with colon cancer, hypertension and even psychiatric disorders. All this, apparently he had him in bed for several weeks and it was what today triggered his death. There are versions that indicate that he died or a stroke, or a heart attack. The news was confirmed by one of his daughters.
The chess player was involved in various situations, from terrorist attacks, perpetrated under the responsibility of the Cali cartel, a group which he led with his brother Miguel; kidnappings, homicides, drug trafficking and even the alleged financing of Ernesto Samper’s presidential campaign.
Precisely former President Samper was the one who ordered the creation of the “Search Blocks”, groups of Police and elite commandos, with the help of international agencies, which sought to find the drug traffickers who were wanted practically all over the world.
This was how in an operation commanded by General Rosso José Serrano, on June 9, 1995, according to the same officer, that they were following the drug accountant, thanks to the infiltration of two women from the institution. One of them noticed that the capo was in a house located in a luxurious neighborhood of Cali, known as Santa Mónica.
When the police identify Rodríguez Orejuela’s perfume, they notify the other uniformed officers to deploy the operation in the house; There they saw that Gilberto, at that time 56 years old, was hiding in a built-in closet. As reported in the chronicle of El País, the chess player said at the time of his capture “don’t do anything to me. Don’t worry, guys, I’m a man of peace.”
At that moment, in the company of General Serrano, they took him to the airport to transfer him to Bogotá, according to what is revealed with great fear that they released him because of the “protection” he had in the capital of Valle del Cauca.
“This is the beginning of the end of the Cali cartel. We are not going to give up until we see this problem completely eradicated from Colombia,” Ernesto Samper said while announcing the capo’s capture.
At that time he was convicted of drug trafficking and conspiracy to offending, at that time, as is known, he tried to bribe the judge to try to get a lighter sentence. He was initially sentenced to 15 years in prison, but his sentence was reduced to 7 for confessing to some crimes and good conduct.
