As of June 1, 2021, high-quality, express-quality content will take up space in your Google Account storage

Google Photos announced a change in its storage policy of unlimited in high quality and users who exceed the 15GB limit offered by the Google account must have a subscription to Google One.

According to the company, this new policy “allows them to keep pace with the growing demand for storage.” It should be noted that files stored on Google Drive will also be impacted.

This change means that users will have a maximum of 15GB of free storage -the one offered by the Google account and which is distributed among the company’s services-, something that until now has been unlimited. Therefore, those who exceed this limit must expand the capacity of their account in Google One, if they want to preserve the possibility of hosting more content.

Like the base storage of the Google account, this service also covers the other products of the company, in such a way that the extension made by the user will be used for Photos, but also for Gmail or Drive. Google One offers plans starting at $ 1.99 a month in the US.

Any photos or videos that were uploaded in high quality before June 1, 2021 will not count towards the 15 GB of free storage. This means that photos and videos saved before then will still be considered free and exempt from the storage limit. Backup quality can be checked at any time by entering Photos app then Settings / Backup and sync / Uploaded file size.

The company estimates that more than 80% of users will have the possibility of storing content for up to 3 more years at no cost within the 15 GB storage, once this restriction takes effect in June 2021. In any case, the company will indicate to users through a notification sent to the app and Gmail email if they approach the free storage limit.

In turn, Google has an oline tool so that the user can have a personalized estimate of how long its storage can last . This estimate is based on how often the user backs up photos, videos, and other content to their Google account. To access the tool you have to enter here.

Finally, the company announced that there will be exceptions: this restriction will not affect users who have a Google Pixel cell phone from 1 to 5. In those cases, the images that are uploaded in the “high quality” version will not occupy the share of the 15 GB.
