The basilica of La Vera Cruz hosted this Sunday the act of
inauguration of the new older brother of the Cofradía de la Vera Cruz, Luis Melgarejo, and the Representative Board of which 18 people make up a team whose objectives have been to promote social work and dissemination of the cult of the Sacred Relic, work with young people and the
preparation of the Jubilee Year 2024.
The ceremony was presided over by the rector of the basilica, Emilio Sánchez, and was attended by the mayor of Caravaca, José Francisco García; the Minister of the Presidency, Tourism and Sports, Marcos Ortuño; among other local and regional authorities. Also present were several former older brothers and representatives of the festive groups.

At the beginning of the celebration, the rector read the prayers of thanksgiving before the banner of the Brotherhood and the medallion of Hermano Mayor, the main banners of the religious institution; After the liturgy of the word, the episcopal decree of appointment of the new elder brother was read and at the end of the homily the blessing of the crosses and the insignia of the members of the new Representative Board took place and, then, the act of taking of possession with the acceptance of Luis Melgarejo of the commitments and responsibilities of the position. Mari Carmen López, who has been in charge of the institution for the last three years, was in charge of delivering the banner to her successor, on whom she also imposed the Big Brother medallion.
Melgarejo will be received this morning by the Bishop of the Diocese, José Manuel Lorca, to whom he will present the main lines of work of the new Representative Board and the preparations for the Solemn Quinary of the Exaltation of the Vera Cruz, which will take place in the month of September.
Rehabilitation project ‘The doors of the millennium’
Among the initiatives to be developed in this new stage, the project ‘The doors of the millennium’ stands out in the heritage section, which would complete the rehabilitation work that is being carried out on the baroque portico of the main facade of the basilica to recover the original colors of the marbles that were used in its construction. Melgarejo stressed that “we have a team of people with in-depth knowledge of each of the areas and we intend to carry out good management in each of them”, and will request the collaboration of the brotherhoods, sectors and groups of the city and institutions.
