Just as the Volkswagen Golf shares its technical foundation with the Audi A3 and the Seat Leon, the sixth generation of the Opel Astra relies on the technical building blocks of the new Peugeot 308. They are on the same platform and use the same engines, but still try their own story to tell. In the first place through their design, because the Opel Astra comes with its own body design and its own interior design.
The body comes with the now well-known Vizor front, a black panel that bundles the radiator grille and the headlights. Those headlights come with the latest generation Intelli-Lux LED technology, with 168 diodes as we encountered earlier on the facelift of the Insignia. The new Opel Astra debuts as a classic hatchback with five doors, later the range may be supplemented with a station wagon version that would again be called Sports Tourer.
Slightly larger, more interior space
Compared to its predecessor, the new Opel Astra has become slightly larger: the five-door body is now 4,374 mm long and 1,860 mm wide, the wheelbase has grown by 13 mm and now stands at 2,675 meters. This translates into more room to move in the rear seat, without negatively impacting the load volume. The boot of the Opel Astra is now 422 liters in size, a gain of more than 50 liters.
