Three Italians in the third round of the US Open: it is the first time this has happened in history. Another prestigious result for our tennis, but that’s not all. Matteo Berrettini, Jannik Sinner and Andreas Seppi will take the field with the hope of reaching the round of 16. We already know who the opponents will be: respectively Ilya Ivashka, Gael Monfils and Oscar Otte. Great interest, on paper, for the match between Sinner and Monfils: seeded number 13 and number 17 face each other, whoever wins will face one between Zverev and Sock.

THE RESULTS

Sinner made it through the first few rounds by winning twice in the fourth set. First against the Australian Max Purcell (6-4 6-2 4-6 6-2) and then against the American Zachary Svajda (6-3 7-6 6-7 6-4). So the good moment of form of the South Tyrolean continues: after the difficulties on the grass (defeat in the first round of the Queen’s and at Wimbledon) and the forfeit at the Olympics, the pupil of Riccardo Piatti is finding excellent sensations on American hard court, as evidenced by the Washington’s 500th victory. Monfils is instead a super veteran of the circuit: the Frenchman has just turned 35, the one against Sinner is a real generational clash. The number 20 in the world won in three sets in the first round against the Argentine Federico Coria (6-3 6-2 6-2), and then overtook Steve Johnson in four (7-5 4-6 6-4 6- 4).

Sinner and Monfils have met twice in their careers, with the balance perfectly balanced: one win each. The two challenges took place within a few days in 2019, on indoor hard courts: October 17 in Antwerp, with Sinner’s wildcard success (6-3 6-2) against a Monfils who was seeded number one in the scoreboard; October 24 in Vienna, with the Frenchman who took revenge and won 6-3 7-6 in the second round. Two years later things have changed a lot: the South Tyrolean has won three ATP titles (two 250s and one 500) and is looking for a further leap in his already rich career. Prior to this edition of the US Open, Sinner had never made it through the first round. While Monfils was semifinalist in 2016 and in his last participation, in 2019, he reached the quarter-finals.
