However, from the town hall they would have indicated that they could not carry out the work because it was a private condominium. For this reason, the neighbors raised money to hire a private individual to remove brush.

The above took place on December 1, where the person in charge of the work deposited the branches and the dry grass removed in a municipal container.

In the middle of that, a truck from the Cosemar company —in charge of waste management— arrived at the scene with a municipal inspector, who fined the woman.

The affected woman told Radio Bío Bío that in September she requested the municipality of Viña del Mar to remove the weeds from the sector, a request that was not accepted.

Fine for depositing plant waste in a container

For this reason, he described as unusual that he was fined for taking this preventive measure. “I even did the job of cleaning the street because with the branches that were there, people couldn’t pass through public roads,” lamented the woman, adding that the fine is because they threw dry grass in a municipal container.

Indeed, from the Municipality of Viña del Mar they confirmed that The sanction is for depositing plant waste in a Cosemar container, which -they explained- does not correspond to the objective of this container, which is the deposit of household waste established in the municipal ordinance.

What does the ordinance say?

“It is prohibited to throw or leave garbage, materials or waste of any kind on beaches, river or lake shores, national parks, national reserves, natural monuments or in other biodiversity conservation areas declared under official protection; as well as deposit or maintain garbage, residues, rubble, plant growth or any kind of waste in public, fiscal or private areas existing in the commune“.

They also specify that the “deposit of plant residues is not adjusted for extraction and, therefore, affects the normal functioning of the operation, collapsing the containers. The consequence of this is the generation of micro-trash dumps, since the containers are left without the capacity to receive household waste from the residents of the sector”.
