The Radford Type 62-2 is a modern tribute to the legendary Lotus Type 62. And that hero worship takes on a new dimension, because the Radford creation gets a JPS version. It is dressed in the gold-black colors of John Player Special, who has been the main sponsor of the Lotus F1 team for many years. The copy in the photos bears the number 12, as was the case on the Lotus-Renault 97T with which Ayrton Senna took part in the 1985 Formula 1 World Championship.
Now the adjustments were not limited to a different color, the JPS is regarded as the top version of the range. The Radford Type 62-2 debuted with a 3.5 liter V6, good for 430 hp. Or even for 500 horsepower in the more powerful Gold Leaf specification. But in the JPS, the compressor-assisted power source is good for no less than 600 horsepower. Thanks to the improved pistons, stronger connecting rods, more aggressive camshafts and larger supercharger. The standard car’s manual transmission has also been replaced by a seven-speed, robotic, dual-clutch transmission.
Light is right
In search of better performance, Radford has applied the old Lotus recipe: almost all superfluous luxury items are removed, so that the Type 62-2 JPS comes out well-trained. In addition, to reduce unsprung weight, the JPS sits on carbon fiber rims, which help offset the extra weight of the larger carbon-ceramic brakes.
