How this is calculated: exact Social Security and Medicare (FICA) math, including the additional 0.9% Medicare surtax above the IRS threshold. Federal and state income tax use the rate you enter — not a bracket table — applied to pay after pre-tax deductions and the standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly in 2026), because a correctly sourced bracket calculator for all 50 states is a separate, larger project. Your rate is your total income tax divided by taxable income on last year’s return. FICA figures sourced from ssa.gov and irs.gov as of 2026-10-30.

How the take-home pay is calculated

The tool subtracts Social Security and Medicare (FICA) taxes, then federal and state income tax at the rates you enter, from your gross pay to estimate take-home pay. Your rates are applied to pay left after pre-tax deductions and the standard deduction.

Assumptions

  • FICA. Social Security 6.2% up to the yearly wage base and Medicare 1.45%, as described by the IRS.
  • Income tax. Uses the tax rates you enter, applied to pay after pre-tax deductions and the standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly in 2026). It is not a full tax calculation.
  • Not included. Pre-tax benefits, local taxes and credits.

Paycheck calculator FAQ

Why is my real paycheck different?

Benefits, retirement contributions, local taxes and your W-4 choices change withholding.

Where do I find my effective rate?

From last year's return: total income tax divided by taxable income (Form 1040, total tax and taxable income lines). Enter that percentage for federal and, if you file one, for your state.

Is this a withholding tool?

No. For withholding use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator.
