“It was terrible, women raised their children over barbed wire, asking soldiers to take them, some got caught in the thread ”. This is referred to Sky News by a senior officer, at the airport in Kabul, Afghanistan, who after the takeover of the Taliban was stormed by thousands of people trying to get on a flight to leave the country. And the photo with a crying baby has already become a symbol.
The officer told of desperate Afghan mothers who threw their children in the hope of saving them by entrusting them to the British military. Reports also confirmed by some videos circulated on social networks. The British defense secretary, Ben Wallace, then specified that “no unaccompanied child will be taken out of Afghanistan”, since the government cannot take care of a single child.
Chaos has reigned for days at Kabul airport. Yesterday, American troops fired into the air in an attempt to disperse the crowd that continues to throng nearby. Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said there are currently 4,500 US soldiers deployed at Kabul airport, with another 700 expected in the next few hours.
“Some shots were fired, mainly around the entrance areas and some of them, as far as we know, were fired by US personnel as non-lethal warnings,” he said, stating that there were no casualties or injuries. Some witnesses said tear gas was also used.
