The Chancellor is concerned about the events in Belarus.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel supported the protesters in Belarus. She said this in a podcast in honor of the upcoming International Day of Democracy on Sunday, September 13, reports Chronicle.info with reference to the Correspondent.
“We are watching the events in Belarus with great concern. There, the commitment to democracy has literally been crushed. Our heart beats with the hearts of the peaceful demonstrators. The courage and determination with which they take to the streets for freedom and the rule of law is admirable, ”Merkel said.
According to her, now we can observe how even authoritarian systems can be economically successful and challenge established democracies in many areas, but at the expense of infringement of basic rights. Merkel stressed that this is not the European path.
The Chancellor urged not to forget what a great achievement democracy is, and noted that it is necessary to defend democratic values by all means.
“We in Germany can consider ourselves lucky that democracy and freedom, the rule of law and political responsibility are firmly entrenched in us,” Merkel stressed, adding that, as the experience of other countries shows, this should not be taken for granted.
