The contact during the first lap of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton generated the clarification by Race Director Michael Masi that the stewards are judging the accident, not the consequences. The same principle was taken into consideration yesterday in the evaluation of the errors committed by Valtteri Bottas And Lance Stroll in the very first meters that took the drivers from the starting grid to the braking of the first corner of the Hungarian Grand Prix. The rain made it difficult to find the braking point on asphalt conditions never experienced during the race weekend and the stewards took this into account.
“Penalties (five positions to be served on the Belgian Grand Prix starting grid) they would have been more severe if the track had been dry – Masi explained as reported by the newspaper motorsportweek.com – Valtteri Bottas and Lance Stroll both made an obvious mistake and were sanctioned accordingly. The fact that the track was wet was certainly taken into consideration. The stewards can give 3, 5, 10 penalty positions on the starting grid until they get to the start from the pit lane and have opted for five positions. This is because the accident is always analyzed, not the consequences ”.
The ‘bill‘of the double strike by Bottas and Stroll at the start of the race in Budapest was due to three other cars knocked out – Sergio Perez’s Red Bull, Lando Norris’s McLaren and Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari – with the RB16-B by Max Verstappen heavily damaged.
