Personal Loans: Lenders Compared

Ten personal loan lenders compared on the terms each one publishes: APR range, loan amounts, terms, origination fee and how fast funds arrive. The APR you are offered depends on your credit, so treat the low end of each range as the best case.

Key takeaways

  • Upstart Personal Loan has the lowest starting APR, 6.30%. The rate you are offered depends on your credit and can be much higher than the starting rate.
  • Compare the APR, not just the interest rate: the APR includes fees such as origination.
  • Wells Fargo Personal Loan ranks first in our scoring (5.0 out of 5). The score uses published terms only; payment plays no part.

How we picked

Each loan gets a 0 to 100 score built from the terms its provider publishes, divided by 20 for the rating out of 5. The weights are fixed and public:

APR 35Origination fee 20Amounts and terms 15Funding speed 10Soft-check prequalification 10Credit requirement 10
  • We read every term from the provider’s own page and show the date. Terms older than 30 days are hidden until re-checked.
  • Payment never enters the score. Links go straight to the provider and we have no commercial agreement with them.
  • Missing information is never guessed. A product without enough published data is not ranked.
  • Providers that block automated reading, or whose terms we could not verify, are not on the list.

How personal loans work

A personal loan pays you a lump sum that you repay in equal monthly payments over a fixed term, usually two to seven years. Most are unsecured, meaning no collateral, so the lender prices the loan on your credit and income. The rate you see in an advertisement is usually the lowest rate for the best borrowers: your own rate can be much higher.

What a $10,000 loan costs

Monthly payment and total interest on $10,000 over 36 months at each lender’s lowest advertised APR, and the payment at its highest APR. Only lenders whose published amount and term ranges include $10,000 and 36 months are shown.

Standard amortization formula applied to the APR; an origination fee, if any, is taken from the loan amount and is already part of the APR. Your offer will differ.

APR, interest rate and origination fees

The interest rate is the cost of borrowing the money. The APR also includes fees, so it is the better number for comparing lenders. An origination fee is charged at the start, usually as a percentage of the loan, and most lenders take it out of the amount you receive. A $10,000 loan with a 5% fee pays out $9,500 but you repay $10,000.

Pre-qualification

Many lenders let you see an estimated rate with a soft credit check, which does not affect your score. A formal application usually needs a hard inquiry, which can lower your score slightly for a short time. Where a lender states that pre-qualification uses a soft check, we say so on its review.

When a personal loan makes sense

A personal loan can lower your cost if its APR is below the rate on the debt it replaces, for example when you consolidate credit card balances, and the fixed payment gives a clear payoff date. It does not help if you keep adding new debt. Compare total interest, not only the monthly payment: a longer term lowers the payment and raises the total. Try the loan APR calculator and the debt payoff calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Which lender has the lowest starting APR?

Upstart Personal Loan at 6.30%, as published on the lender’s page. Your own APR depends on your credit and the loan terms.

Will checking my rate hurt my credit?

Pre-qualification with a soft check does not affect your score. A full application normally includes a hard inquiry. The lender’s page says which one applies.

What credit score do I need?

It varies by lender and is often not published. Where a lender states a minimum score we show it on the review. Higher scores usually get lower rates.

Is an origination fee bad?

It raises the cost, but it is already included in the APR. A loan with a fee and a lower rate can cost less in total than a loan with no fee and a higher rate, so compare APRs.
