Born a year after his brother, the princess Caroline of Monaco, however, is not at the head of the principality. Explanations.

If Albert II is now sovereign prince of Monaco, he has the primogeniture cognatique to male preference. Still in force on the Rock and in Spain, this law indicates that the male preference refers to equal rank in the order of succession. In fact, it is, for example, the prince Albert II who is the head of Monaco while he was born a year after his sister, princess Caroline. In most of the european royal families, it is this last that would have come to power, at the expense of his little brother.

This rule of primogeniture cognatique to male preference, article 10 of the Constitution of Monaco, will still have a very important role to play, in the next few years. In fact, the prince Albert II is the father of two legitimate children : Jacques and Gabriella. The brother and sister do not have to fight to know who is the older of the two, since, according to the monegasque law, this question does not need to be : James, as a man, has the priority on her twin sister.

A law in force in the United Kingdom since 2013

Very criticized in Europe, this law is no longer in force in Spain and Monaco. The United Kingdom abandoned it in 2013. It was, in particular, had an impact on the rank in the order of succession of the princess Anne, which is located behind his brothers, Andrew and Edward, while she is older than them. The princess Charlotte is in it, well above his little brother, prince Louis, in the current order of succession due to the abandonment of this law.

One european country did the worst, in terms of gender equality, as Monaco, and Spain. It is the Liechtenstein. In this tiny principality wedged between Switzerland and Austria, it is, at present, prohibits a woman from taking the throne. In practice, this means that if the sovereign prince only has daughters, we will look for the future leader among his nephews. There is still work to be done before all the european royal families are at the point on equality between women and men…
