There shortage of microchips and semiconductors continues to bring the automotive sector to its knees. And the impact of the crisis in the medium and long term will certainly not stop being felt in the short term: the VDA, an association of the German automotive industry, is convinced that the consequences of the shortage of these components will continue to have a negative impact on production. of cars at European level. Precisely for this reason, the same association has asked the EU to strengthen production capacity of microchips and semiconductors across the continent.
BMW: “The chip crisis is not over, critical situation”
“The automotive industry is not alone in dealing with this shortage, which makes the matter more complex – said Hildegard Müller, the president of the VDA – In the short and medium term it will be difficult to find solutions. The exponential increase in the demand for microchips it requires a long-term solution“. In Germany, production has fallen significantly below expectations in recent months, a drop that has led the VDA itself to revise its estimates of production growth in the country: from 13% to 3%. In numerical terms, 3.6 million cars are expected to be produced in Germany in 2021, down 400,000 units from the latest forecast. But to suffer from it it will not be just production: The VDA also lowered its estimates for new car sales in Germany, from 8% to 3%.

The president of the VDA then touched on the aspect linked to electric cars, and to the main obstacles that hold back the explosion. One for all, the lack of infrastructure. “Those who decide to buy an electric vehicle should not worry that the infrastructure is not available – has explained – In the end, it is the consumer who will decide whether electric mobility will be successful or not ”. Currently, 68% of charging points in the EU are available in just three states: Germany, France and the Netherlands. “To reach more than 1 million electric car charging points in Germany by 2030, 2,000 new charging points need to be built every week, and at least 6 million charging points across the EU are needed.”he concluded, adding that plug-in hybrid vehicles are one good alternative on sustainability.
