Climate change Concrete company Rudus aims to halve its emissions by 2035

Halving emissions is an intermediate goal, as the company aims to make its operations carbon neutral by 2050.

Aggregate company Rudus says it plans to halve emissions from all its operations by 2035. The benchmark is the company’s emissions in 2019.

For its part, the company aims for full carbon neutrality by 2050.

The most important raw material for concrete is cement, which is a major contaminant. Its production accounts for an estimated 5-8% of all global CO2 emissions. In Finland, cement production accounts for about 1.6 per cent of emissions.

Rudus states that it is aware of the climate emissions of the concrete industry and has drawn up environmental responsibility targets and milestones, in particular to achieve carbon neutrality targets. As a background, the company says that it has commissioned a carbon footprint calculation covering the entire operation.

“However, Rudus’ role in environmental responsibility is not limited to emissions, but the circular economy and biodiversity play an equally important role,” Mikael Fjäder says in a company release.

According to the release, the cement and concrete industries have reduced their emissions by more than a fifth from 1990 levels.

“Low-carbon solutions are already a default and a significant competitive factor in practice. Climate-sustainable solutions are required throughout the value chain. Here, Rudus has excellent opportunities, ”says Rudus, Director of Quality and Development Mika Tulimaa in the bulletin.

Rudus also says it aims to reduce the carbon footprint of concrete by replacing natural aggregates with recycled concrete crushed stone. This is aided by Rudus’ own concrete research laboratory, which, according to the company, researches and develops environmentally friendly product solutions.
