Starting from the Silverstone weekend, Formula 1 will adopt a new type of rear tires. More resistant tires and – theoretically – less subject to deterioration. A change in racing that was made in the name of safety, after the spectacular and dangerous accidents that occurred to Max Verstappen and Lance Stroll in Baku, in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. This change of course comes for the Pirelli – sole supplier of the Circus – a few months before the great revolution of 2022. Next year, in addition to the cars, the tires will also change. We will switch to 18-inch tires, which teams and drivers are already testing this year in various dedicated sessions.
FIA, official: new Pirelli from Silverstone
As has happened several times in the past, the Italian company ended up in crosshairs of criticism of fans and even some teams. In his defense, however, the leaders of F1 moved directly, starting with the new CEO, Stefano Domenicali. The manager from Imola, during a long interview with the Dutch site RacingNews365, showed appreciation for the work done by Pirelli: “The most important thing is that we are particularly grateful for what Pirelli is doing – underlined Domenicali – Sometimes we find ourselves in a situation where we criticize a certain part without realizing that that part is an important partner for Formula 1. The technical challenges that Pirelli has to face are enormous. After all, there are no other cars in the world with the same performance. So we need to have a lot of respect for what Pirelli is doing“.

The number one of Formula 1 also remarked the difficult combination of show and safety who is required to find who has the role of sole supplier of the Circus: “The tire must also be able to show off. And since Pirelli is the only supplier, teams can ask for – for example – super soft tires that last only ten laps, or tires that last a little longer, with which different strategies can be conceived. It is a very difficult question for Pirelli”Domenicali concluded.
