(Reuters) – Electricity consumption in the first half of August increased 1% over the same period in 2020, to 60,689 average megawatts, reported the Chamber of Commerce of Electric Energy (CCEE) on Thursday.
Consumption in the first part of the month also showed an increase compared to 2019, by 1.4%, which confirms the trend that demand is higher than in the pre-pandemic period.
For the institution, the result reflects the significant advance in the free market (ACL) of 7.8% compared to 2020. This segment serves industries and large commercial networks and is responsible for 35% of total consumption in the country.
While the regulated market (ACR), responsible for small businesses, small and medium companies and residential consumers, had a consumption reduction of 2.3%, also considering the loads that left the segment for the free environment.

The chairman of the CCEE Board of Directors, Rui Altieri, stated that the organization expects lower growth rates in the coming months, as there was already a greater resumption of consumption in the second half of last year.
“We are gradually returning to normality, with levels similar to the history of our sector,” stated Altieri.
In regional consumption, Espírito Santo was the state that had the highest increase compared to the same month last year, 11%, with Sergipe right after (10%), and Ceará, Maranhão and Piauí equally with an increase of 7%.
