An American soldier searches a woman before evacuating her from Kabul airport
The evacuation of foreigners and Afghans at Kabul airport entered its final stage today, Sunday, two days before the expected full US withdrawal amid fears of a new attack.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken told ABC there were still “300 or fewer Americans” to be evacuated from Afghanistan. “We are actively working during these hours and days to get these people out,” he said.
After the suicide attack claimed by the terrorist organization ISIS, which killed 13 American soldiers and about a hundred Afghans out of thousands who gathered in front of the airport to try to leave the country, US President Joe Biden warned of a “very likely” attack on Kabul airport Sunday or Monday.
Since mid-August, after the Taliban took control of Kabul, about 114,400 people have left the country, according to recent figures released by the White House.
The pace of evacuations has decreased in recent days, at a time when several European countries, including Britain and France, announced the end of their evacuation operations, with the expectation of a full US withdrawal on August 31.
This short period raises the fear that some of the Afghans who have been working with foreign forces or civilians during the last two decades will not be able to be evacuated.
