The new AMG boss wants fewer models, but thanks to a closer relationship with the Mercedes F1 team, they are becoming more powerful than ever.
At the IAA in Munich 2021, Mercedes presented two brand new AMG models: the 100% electric EQS 53 AMG and the plug-in hybrid GT 4-Door Coupé 63S E Performance. The first develops to 762 hp, the second is even 843 hp strong. And that’s exactly how Philipp Schiemer likes it. The new patron of the AMG division wants to reduce the number of models, but introduce more powerful standard-bearers.
Which models will die?
Schiemer also wants to strengthen ties with the British HPP department, the place where Mercedes builds the hybrid F1 engines. He wants a closer relationship between Formula 1 cars and AMG road sports cars. If you read carefully between the lines, you will know that the bottom of the range will be deleted. Then we think in the first place of the Mercedes A-Class and its SUV derivatives. Will they be the children of the account?
AMG is said to be fully engaged in the development of a specific EV platform, which will form the high-tech basis for the sports cars of the future. It would no longer be about AMG versions of existing Mercedes models, but more about special sports cars with a specific mission. Only the R&D of that electrical architecture costs a lot of money. And then choices have to be made.
