Former politician and administrator Pieter Beelaerts van Blokland died last Wednesday at the age of 88 in Utrecht. His family announced this in an obituary on Saturday Fidelity announced. In the 1970s and 1980s, Beelaerts van Blokland was, among other things, Minister of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment (VROM), a member of the House of Representatives and for a long time the Queen’s Commissioner in Utrecht (1985-1998).
Born in the South Holland village of Heerjansdam, Beelaerts van Blokland was originally a member of the political party CHU (Christelijk Historische Unie), which merged into the current CDA in 1980. He started his career in 1963 as mayor of Wolphaartsdijk in Zeeland, where he subsequently became a member of the Provincial Council. Later he would also hold the mayoralty of Vianen, Apeldoorn, Amstelveen and Hengelo.
