It’s a Lewis Hamilton far from happy that he presented himself to the microphones of Sky Sports F1 immediately after the Belgian Grand Prix: more than for the event itself, which in fact never took place due to the heavy rain that poured on the circuit of Spa-Francorchamps, the reigning world champion did not accept the decisions taken by the Race Direction to carry out two laps behind the Safety Car, the minimum allowed to establish a final classification based on the results obtained yesterday in qualifying.
With the pole of Max Verstappen, the Dutchman thus “won” the test ahead of Russell and Hamilton himself, with all the drivers finally achieving halved scores: a choice that the driver of the Mercedes, who vented his disappointment in this way: “I think sport has made a wrong decision today – commented the seven-time world champion – money talks. Two laps to run the race are all a matter of interest. Everyone has benefited from it and I hope the same also applies to the fans. They don’t have to pay for what they saw ”.
With the possibility of the postponement of the race to tomorrow now definitively discarded, the British has thus seen his advantage reduced to only three points on the direct Dutch opponent of Red Bull. The reigning world champion, also regarding this, expressed his disappointment: “It’s a pity we can’t race tomorrow – added English – I love this track and I’m sorry it can’t be done. This it cannot be defined as a race“.
Finally, Hamilton dedicated a last thought to the hundreds of spectators who could not enjoy the show on the track: “I am truly sorry for them – he concluded The Hammer – but we can’t control the weather. I love to compete in a race, but today it was something different. You couldn’t see the car in front, it was a disaster. They were not allowed to attend the event, e I hope they will be reimbursed“.
