At least 28 people died this Saturday in the state of Pernambuco, in northeastern Brazil, due to heavy rains affecting the region, so the total number of victims since the beginning of the week rose to 33, reported official sources.
According to the first information released by the news channel Globonews , At least 19 of the 28 victims died during a landslide in a village in the Ibura neighborhood, in the southern area of Recife, capital of Pernambuco state.
The Mayor’s Office of the town of Camaragibe also confirmed another 6 deaths due to a landslide in a wooded area of the city. Two died in Recife and another in Jaboatao dos Guararapes.
“Five other deaths had already occurred in Tuesday’s storm,” Civil Defense reported in a statement. According to the local press, of the remaining five, four were in Olinda, three buried by landslides and one after falling into a canal.
The rains caused landslides and floods throughout the state, mainly in Recife and its metropolitan region, which in the last 24 hours recorded 70% of the rainfall forecast for the entire month of May.

Almost a thousand people were evicted, for which the Recife Mayor’s Office opened schools and nurseries to accommodate families who had to leave their homes.
The authorities have warned that the situation may worsen in the coming hours, when even more intense rainfall is expected, mainly in the metropolitan region of Recife.
Between Friday night and Saturday morning, the amount of rain reached 236 millimeters in some parts of the capital of Pernambuco, according to the mayor’s office.
