New details arise on the acquisition of the Housemarque from Sony and apparently there was a real dispute with other companies to secure the Finnish software house.
After the success of Returnal, their title released exclusively for PlayStation 5, at first glance we could say that their union arose spontaneously. The CEO of Housemarque himself was able to publicly express his gratitude to Sony, which believed in a project of such ambition. It was not the first time that the Finnish company collaborated with the Japanese company: already in 2006 they had developed Super Stardust HD, released for Playstation 3.
However, new behind-the-scenes information has arisen and it’s the CEO himself talking about it Ilari Kuittinen. In addition to Sony, in fact, there were other parties interested in acquiring the Finnish software house, referring to some countries such as China, Sweden and the United States, but without going into the specifics of who the buyers were.
During the development of Returnal, Kuittinen specified that it was clear that Sony intended to finalize the acquisition of Housemarque, but the fact that it was also contested by other companies seemed really surreal.

In our meetings it was clear that Sony wanted to buy us because we were making something that others weren’t doing. Their starting point was that we were not going to make games following a formula set by Sony itself.
Regarding the countries named by Kuittinen, one of the biggest names in the country is Tencent, which has been collaborating with other large companies within the sector for years. As for Sweden we could think of Embracer Group, while in the United States we would have Epic Games, Microsoft and other names. The success of Returnal it has certainly attracted the attention of many big fish.
After Housemarque, another big acquisition that Sony has made in recent days concerns Nixxes, a development house specializing in design and porting. Among some of his recent works we have Marvel’s Avengers is Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
