Federal Foreign Minister Heiko Maas (SPD) does not assume that all Afghans who are entitled to leave the country will actually be able to be brought to safety from Kabul Airport in the next few days.
Berlin – “We will not be able to get everyone out of Afghanistan in the remaining days of this military evacuation operation,” Maas said on Bild TV on Tuesday. “That calls for the honesty to say that.”
Even if the international deployment at Kabul airport were to be extended for a few more days beyond the previously targeted end date of August 31, not all of the people who wished to do so could be flown out, said Maas. It must be weighed up how long the security of the forces on site and the people to be flown out can be guaranteed. “It’s a very, very difficult trade-off,” he said.

“That is why we, together with the USA and Great Britain, have now started to consider how people can be brought out of Afghanistan after the military evacuation,” said Maas. The end of the military evacuation should not be the end of the possibilities for people to leave the country.
“To do this, you have to go ways that you don’t want to go,” said Maas, referring to negotiations with the radical Islamic Taliban. The Taliban have threatened “consequences” if the US does not completely withdraw its troops from Afghanistan and thus also from Kabul airport by August 31, as planned.
