Lionel Messi traveled to France to join Paris Saint-Germain, but in a far corner of the world in his home country of Argentina the dream ended, or at least for a while, by watching him finish his career at boyhood club Newell’s Old Boys.
Messi grew up in Rosario in love with Newell’s Old Boys, and every time there was speculation about the Argentine star’s future, Newell’s name was mentioned as one of the clubs in which he might end his career.
Argentinian football is in chaos, clubs are in deep financial straits, and prominent players have left, but all these things did not stop Newell’s fans from dreaming.
“Of course we have hope on every occasion like this, maybe he will never come but we have not lost hope,” said former club president Juan Jose Cosina. Every time news spreads about his departure from Barcelona, the name Newell’s Old Boys appears because of history and mutual love.
Newell’s fans and officials believe that Messi will one day wear the club’s shirt, but they know that the Argentine star may still have a few years in Europe before returning to his country.
